WOMEN’S POLLS HAVE LOUISIANA TECH AT THE TOP

No surprise that Louisiana Tech women’s basketball, under the direction of Teresa Weatherspoon, earned some first place votes in the latest Western Athletic Conference coaches preseason poll, considering their share of the conference title with Fresno State the last two seasons. Maybe surprising though is that the Bulldogs weren’t even picked to finish at second in one poll, considering their run of success in the last four seasons, which has seen four WAC championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. MALE ATHLETE: JALEN SAUNDERS Not only did he accumulate 184 yards off of eight touches despite the loss to Ole Miss this past Saturday, the sophomore wide receiver also became a part of school history. His 127 yard receiving performance gives him three straight 100 yard games, a first for a Bulldog wide receiver since Bernard Berrian back in 2001. HAT TRICK THE DIFFERENCE DOWN IN BAKERSFIELD

Normally, a hat trick is common on the hockey rink. Yet, a hat trick came into good use for Fresno State women’s soccer on Sunday afternoon versus Cal State Bakersfield. Junior Callie Hancock scored all three goals for the Bulldogs to earn the honor, as Fresno State defeated the Roadrunners 3-1 down in Bakersfield. Hancock took eight shots total, including six on goal. She is currently leading her team with seven goals in 2011. BULLDOG FOOTBALL PLAYERS TIED TO WELFARE FRAUD CASE

First, it was Ohio State’s checkered past forcing head football coach Jim Tressel out, then came all the grim reports involving the University of Miami from incarcerated ex-booster Nevin Shapiro, now it appears the next school that could come under fire is the one we report on. According to The Associated Press, at least 24 different Fresno State football players have been implicated in a welfare fraud investigation.
