TWO EX-BULLDOGS GET PRO BOWL HONORS

Going to Honolulu at this point seems to be nothing new for All-Pro offensive guard Logan Mankins, who was named to his fourth pro bowl selection on Tuesday.

Yet this time, the former Bulldog standout might have to show Ryan Mathews around.

Along with Mankins, Ryan Mathews became the second former Fresno State player to earn Pro Bowl honors as an alternate running back for the 2012 AFC squad, making it the first Pro Bowl nod in his two-year career.

Mankins was selected as a starting guard for the AFC squad along with fellow offensive linemen Brian Waters of New England. Mankins and Waters were among an AFC-high eight Pro Bowl selections for the Patriots.

For Mathews, he saw a significant jump in his stats from his rookie campaign, thanks to 1,091 yards rushing and an average of 4.9 yards per carry.

During his rookie season that was plagued by injuries, Mathews was limited to 678 yards and scored seven times. His 1,091 yards ranks him sixth overall in the AFC. He has four games of 100 rushing yards or more this season. He also has 50 receptions out of the backfield for 455 yards and has 10 games where he combined for over 100 yards running and receiving.

Along with Mathews, quarterback Phillip Rivers, tight end Antonio Gates, free safety Eric Weddle, wide receiver Vincent Jackson and center Nick Hardwick also earned Pro Bowl recognition for San Diego.
